What is a digital matrix

The digital matrix is the video scheduling core of the monitoring center: it obtains multiple IPC/NVR digital streams from the network, After decoding, it is output to splicing screens and monitors to realize functions such as multi-screen wall posting, planned patrols, and alarm linkage pop-ups.

The difference with analog matrix: analog matrix switches analog video signals (BNC), while digital matrix processes network code streams. Supports higher resolution and more flexible picture layout, and is not limited by the number of physical board channels (limited by decoding capabilities).

Key parameters for selection

  • Number of input channels: The number of IPC/NVR channels that can be accessed simultaneously.
  • Decoding capability: Such as "16 channels 1080P@30fps" or "4 channels 4K@30fps", this is the most critical indicator.
  • Output interface: Number of HDMI output channels (corresponding to the number of splicing screens), and whether it supports 4K output.
  • Supported resolution: Whether to support 4K / H.265 decoding.
  • Screen Split: Single screen supports 1/4/9/16 split.
  • Linkage capabilities: Alarm input, alarm linkage plan, and platform docking capabilities.

Capacity Planning Example

A monitoring center has a total of 6 46-inch splicing screens of 2×3, each screen has 4 divided displays:

  • Requires 6 HDMI outputs → The matrix must have at least 6 HDMI output ports.
  • Need to display 6 × 4 = 24 channels of images at the same time → decoding capability of at least 24 channels of 1080P.
  • If there is a patrol plan, the number of input channels must cover all points.

Common pitfalls

  • Only looking at the number of HDMI outputs and ignoring the decoding capabilities will lead to lagging or exceeding the capabilities during multi-segmentation.
  • The resolution of the splicing screen does not match the resolution of the matrix output (such as 4K screen connected to 1080P output).
  • H.265 decoding is not considered, resulting in the front-end being unable to access the wall when using H.265.
  • Alarm linkage requires the cooperation of the platform or NVR, and a simple matrix cannot be completed independently.
  • Ignoring the physical distance from the splicing screen, HDMI long-distance transmission requires a fiber optic extender or network cable extender.
