Why ONVIF is based on security
Monitoring standardization is based on multiple pillars
In recent years, with the development of the video surveillance market, more and more security companies have discovered that compatibility issues between video surveillance system products have become a serious problem that must be faced in actual projects. However, due to the lack of unified standards, images from different systems cannot be interconnected and shared, and images from different manufacturers cannot be interconnected and shared. Later expansion and maintenance are very difficult, and the development of upper-layer applications faces a lot of costs. Therefore, organizations on security product interoperability standards have emerged in endlessly, among which the three major industry alliances in the world are mainstream, including ONVIF, PSIA and HDcctv. Among them, ONVIF and PSIA are networked digital high-definition surveillance technologies based on IP network transmission media, while HDcctv is based on traditional CCTV video transmission media. At present, the mainstream direction of most manufacturers and R&D institutions in the market is still networked digital high-definition surveillance technology based on IP network transmission media. Therefore, discussions about the two major standards organizations ONVIF and PSIA are also increasing.
ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum): It is an international open network video product standard network interface development forum jointly established by AXIS, BOSCH and SONY. It jointly formulates open industry standards based on the principles of openness and openness, and is committed to defining IP-based physical security products, developing global open standards and promoting the use of standards, ensuring interoperability between products produced by different manufacturers, thereby ensuring that end users and integrated users do not need to be bound by the inherent solutions of certain devices, greatly reducing system management costs, obtaining cost-effective, more flexible solutions, market expansion opportunities and lower risks.
PSIA (Physical Security Interoperability Alliance): Physical Security Interoperability Alliance, established in August 2008. The goal of the alliance is to create a standardized interface for the hardware and software platforms of physical security systems to make different security systems based on IP networks compatible.
In order to manage the growing number of video surveillance systems at controllable costs, my country also officially implemented GB/T 28181-2011 "Technical Requirements for Information Transmission, Exchange, and Control of Security Video Surveillance Networking Systems" on June 1, 2012. This standard stipulates the interconnection structure, communication protocol structure, control, transmission process, protocol interface and security technical requirements for information transmission, exchange and control in security video surveillance network systems. It is applicable to the program design, system testing, acceptance and related equipment development and production of security video surveillance network systems and urban monitoring and alarm network systems.
Compared with PSIA, ONVIF is better
Although PSIA was established earlier, the ONVIF alliance is superior in terms of the number of supported manufacturers and influence. According to a survey by IMS Research, members of the ONVIF organization currently account for 72% of the market share and have many member companies in North America, Europe and Asia. As of October 2014, ONVIF has more than 500 members worldwide. In addition to the three sponsoring companies, Axis, Bosch and Sony, influential companies such as Canon, Panasonic, Samsung, Cisco, Siemens, TI Texas Instruments, Hikvision, Zhejiang Dahua, Honeywell, ZTE, etc. have participated in this standards organization. Although the PSIA alliance also has big brands such as Cisco, Honeywell, and Panasonic, its market share is far smaller than ONVIF.
In terms of product focus, ONVIF focuses more on network video surveillance, especially in cameras and image analysis. Although ONVIF has also launched the Profile G specification for storage devices and the Profile C specification for access control systems, its most widely used is still Profile S, the interface protocol between network video sending equipment and network video clients. The agreement involves device development, device configuration, event alarms, PTZ control, video analysis, and real-time video streaming. PSIA involves network-based security systems, including video surveillance, access control, storage and other security hardware equipment markets.
In terms of key compatibility, ONVIF has advantages over PISA. Compared with PSIA, ONVIF standards are more stringent. For example, its network discovery mechanism is based on WS search, so there is no compatibility issue with device searches between ONVIF products. PSIA allows the use of multiple mechanisms for device search, such as Zeroconf, UPnP, Bonjour, etc. Although they are all devices that comply with PSIA standards, cameras that support Bonjour cannot be connected to the UPnP video management system. ONVIF has also launched a Profile strategy to ensure support for compatibility issues between products of different ONVIF versions.
ONVIF and GB/T 28181 complement each other
The GB/T 28181 standard was created to meet the access needs between various platforms, achieve centralized review at the provincial and national levels, and provide on-site control and command and dispatch of major events. Although ONVIF and GB/T 28181 are essentially designed to facilitate the interconnection and interoperability of video surveillance equipment based on IP networks, the focuses of the two are different and there is no major contradiction. GB/T 28181 involves more at the system level, including cascading between devices and cascading between systems, while ONVIF is more applied to the interconnection between devices and does not cover the docking between systems.
Therefore, ONVIF and GB/T 28181 often play complementary roles. For example, the IPC is connected to the NVR through the ONVIF protocol, and the NVR then uses the GB/T 28181 standard access platform, or the IPC uses ONVIF to access the platform, and the interaction between the platform and other platforms uses the GB/T 28181 standard.
At present, ONVIF's current influence in the Chinese security market is relatively weak. Although many domestic manufacturers have joined the ONVIF alliance, in fact a large number of manufacturers are playing the role of "followers". Many manufacturers have not only become ONVIF members but also joined other standard alliances in the industry, such as PSIA, HDcctv, etc. They hope to be technically in line with international standards by joining the International Standards Alliance, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of their products.
In recent years, with the development and growth of China's security market, a number of world-class security product suppliers have been cultivated. They are not only satisfied with the domestic security market but also seek to go global and occupy overseas markets. The ONVIF protocol is an international open industry standard and has been widely accepted by the international market. The introduction of the ONVIF protocol has played a decisive role in opening up overseas markets for domestic manufacturers.
Recognizing this, some well-known domestic manufacturers have become unwilling to play the role of "followers" and become the highest-level members of the ONVIF Alliance - "leaders", leading the development of the ONVIF protocol and actively promoting its promotion in China. On the other hand, the domestic security market's awareness of ONVIF is further deepening, with reference to ONVIF to a certain extent, and confidence in the promotion of ONVIF is gradually increasing. We believe that the flexibility and convenience that ONVIF brings to network monitoring solutions can help domestic security products develop faster, integrate with the international market, and achieve global interconnection.
