Planning and tiered storage strategy for video storage days
Combining compliance requirements and costs, explain how to set the number of storage days by region, as well as regular archiving and capacity warning practices.
How to determine the number of days
The number of storage days is usually determined by three aspects:
- Industry compliance requirements: Industries such as finance, education, and hazardous chemicals have clear minimum storage periods (commonly 30 to 90 days).
- Business needs: Dispute evidence collection often requires replaying the situation weeks or even months ago.
- Budget constraint: The number of days is proportional to the storage cost and needs to be balanced.
Layering suggestions
| Area type | Recommended number of days | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Entrances, perimeters, cashiers/counters | 90 to 180 days | Disputes are common, and evidence collection has the highest value |
| Main passages, elevators, halls | 30~90 days | General evidence collection requirements |
| General indoor areas and warehouses | 30 days | Meet basic needs |
| Non-key areas | 15 to 30 days | Event-driven recording is sufficient |
Methods to reduce storage costs
- Hiered code rate: high code rate for key channels and low code rate for ordinary channels, rather than uniformity for the whole site.
- Motion detection recording: Only record non-key areas when there is movement, which can save more than 50% of space. However, please pay attention to the risk of missing records, and it is not recommended for important areas.
- Reduce frame rate: Static area is reduced from 25fps to 12~15fps.
- Enable smart encoding: H.265+ saves about 50% compared to H.264.
- Demarcate effective areas: Only record the effective parts of the picture, and block information-free areas such as the sky and greenery.
Capacity Management
- Set the capacity alarm threshold (such as an alarm when 15% is left) to avoid discovering it when it is full.
- Regularly check the video integrity report to confirm that no time periods are missing.
- Important events are exported and archived in a timely manner instead of occupying online storage for a long time.
- Establish an expansion plan: reserve disk space or support external storage expansion.
- Evaluate once a year: increasing points and upgrading resolution will quickly consume capacity.
