Outdoor camera protection level IP66 / IP67 and lightning protection grounding points
Understand the meaning of IP protection level, explain the waterproof installation details of outdoor equipment and three-level lightning protection measures, and reduce the failure rate in rainy season.
How to read IP protection level
The first number after IP is Dust-proof grade (0~6), and the second number is Waterproof grade (0-9K). Common outdoors:

Note: IP67 does not mean "long-term soaking in water". The sealing ring will age under hot and cold cycles and ultraviolet rays, so long-term water accumulation still needs to be avoided.
Waterproof installation details
- Connector facing down: The crystal head of the network cable and the power connector must face downward or make a drip bend to prevent rainwater from flowing in along the line.
- Use a waterproof box: Install a waterproof junction box at the outdoor wiring location and wrap it with waterproof glue/self-adhesive tape.
- Sealing of cable entry holes: The cable entrances at the bracket threading holes and pole hand holes must be sealed with glue.
- Do not install upside down: Installing non-anti-inversion models upside down will damage the waterproof structure.
- Sunshade and anti-high temperature: Install a sunshade to reduce internal condensation and component aging.
Three-level lightning protection
- Direct lightning protection: A lightning rod is installed on the top of the pole, the protection range is calculated according to the rolling ball method, and the down conductor is prepared.
- Inductive lightning protection: Install a network + power two-in-one lightning protector on the front of the device. This is the easiest to omit but the most effective link.
- Grounding: Lightning arresters, equipment shells, poles, and metal brackets are grounded uniformly. The recommended grounding resistance is ≤ 10Ω (important areas ≤ 4Ω).
Other suggestions
- In thunderstorm-prone areas, metal-cased equipment is preferred and equipotential connections must be made.
- Lightning protectors must be installed at both ends of long-distance overhead cables.
- Inspect the status of the lightning protection device once a year before the thunderstorm season. After being struck by lightning, the lightning protection module should be replaced even if the equipment is normal.
- Install voltage stabilization and overcurrent protection at the power supply end to avoid batch damage caused by voltage fluctuations.
